1999 Internet Baseball League Championship Series Report

Game 1:

Pedro Martinez absolutely dominated San Jose, hurling eight innings of
two-hit ball, to make a second inning run stand up for a 1-0 lead at San
Jose. Steve Parris was also masterful in defeat, holding the vaunted Ghost
offense to only four hits in seven innings.

Chipper Jones got the Ghosts their one run by walking, taking third on an
Eric Davis single, and scoring on a Nomar Garciaparra ground out. The rbi
at bat was Garciaparra’s last, as he wrenched his back in the bottom of the
second and is out for at least the next five days.

At that point the game turned into a pitcher’s duel until Parris got in
trouble in the top of the eighth, allowing a single to Mike Redmond and
hitting Jeff Kent with one out. Parris was lifted for John Rocker and the
Ghosts countered with lefty-killer extraordinaire Shane Spencer. Spencer
lifted a deep flyball to left field, however Rickey Henderson scaled the
fence to haul in the would be home run. The play was doubly disastrous for
the Ghosts as Jeff Kent collided with Mark McLemore at second base as he
advanced on the out. Kent was lost for the Series, leaving the Ghosts with
only one experienced middle infielder, Aaron Ledesma. McLemore was also
seriously hurt, although there is a possibility that he might play if the
Series returned to San Jose. Even with Gary Gaetti as his new second
baseman, Rocker was able to escape the jam by inducing Jeff Bagwell to
ground to short.

With Spencer as his new shortstop, Martinez struggled in the eighth,
allowing a Tom Lampkin single, and a stolen base to pinchrunner Devon White.
But Chipper Jones made a defensive play, and Martinez fanned Rickey
Henderson to get the inning under control. Martinez also struggled in the
ninth, allowing the two batters he faced to reach. However Jerry Dipoto,
Kerry Ligtenberg, and Rudy Seanez each got the one batter they were asked to
face to preserve the 1-0 win. Seanez recorded the save.

Game 2:

The Ghost staff, led by Mike Mussina, hurled another magical performance and
Shane Spencer delivered a two-run home run to give the Ghosts a two game
lead in the Internet Baseball League Championship Series.

San Jose took a first-inning lead on Mark McGwire’s solo blast, his first of
the series. In the top of the third, Chipper Jones singled and advanced to
second on a Jeremy Burnitz miscue. Shortstop Aaron Ledesma then singled
Jones home to tie the game. Ledesma then terrified Ghosts management by
tweaking his hamstring stealing second base. Being a tough guy, despite
being only normally durable, Ledesma – the Ghosts’ only regular middle
infielder – stayed in the game, although his running was reduced for three
days. However, Ledesma did not need his speed to score from second as a
blast by Shane Spencer made the game 3-1. Spencer rewarded Ghosts
management for saving most of his limited appearances against left handed
pitchers for the Championship Series.

The story of the game was Mussina, who allowed only three hits in six
innings without walking a batter and while striking out seven. After the
Ghosts added an insurance run on doubles by Rondell White and Tim Salmon,
Mussina handed the ball to Troy Percival. Percival pitched two hitless
innings, striking out four and walking one, for a hold, and Jose Paniagua
threw a perfect ninth for the save.

The second basemen in this game were Gary Gaetti and Tim Salmon.

Game 3:

Back in the Rocky Mountain air after struggling at sea-level, the Ghosts
offense awoke in game three for six in the third inning behind a three-run
Mark Whiten home run and a three-run triple by Aaron Ledesma. With those
six runs in his pocket, Francisco Cordova was able to cruise to a 9-2,
complete-game, five-hit win to put the Ghosts on the cusp of an Internet
Baseball League title.

Orel Hershisher was dominant for the first two innings for the visiting
Canusius, but he clearly lost his control in the third. Darryl Strawberry
led off with a single and Mike Redmond walked before Whiten blasted a shot
to left field. Jeff Bagwell then drove the next ball past Mark McGwire for
a double into the corner and, an out later, walks to Eric Davis and Chipper
Jones loaded the bases. Barry Larkin snagged a peg of Richard Hidalgo’s
bat, but shortstop Aaron Ledesma, only playing because of injuries to Nomar
Garciaparra and Jeff Kent, tripled to the left field wall to make the game
6-0.

The Ghosts manufactured a seventh run in the fifth, but Sean Berry staunched
the bleeding for San Jose with a two-run home runin the top of the sixth.
Cordova then settled down, retiring nine in a row before allowing a two-out
single in the ninth. By that time the Ghosts had added a pair of runs in
the seventh and a tired Cordova was able to fan pinchhitter Quinten
McCracken for the final out.

Gary Gaetti and Tim Salmon were the second basemen in this game.

Game 4:

A first-inning Darryl Strawberry three-run home run gave the Ghosts a lead
and an eighth-inning Rondell White grand slam put the game away, and in
between Pedro Martinez was masterful as the Ghosts won 10-0 to clinch their
first Internet Baseball League title.

Tim Raines and Chipper Jones started the bottom of the first with walks,
with Raines scoring on an Eric Davis single. The next batter, Darryl
Strawberry, powered a ball to left center, and the Ghosts were up 4-0 and
the partying began in Caspar.

Martinez owned the first six innings, allowing only two hits, one a Tom
Lampkin triple, and unintentionally walking Mark McGwire twice. Martinez,
who was working on three days rest, left the game in the seventh inning
after allowing a one out single to Gary Gaetti. Vic Darensbourg and Jerry
Dipoto retired pinchhiters Lou Collier and Devon White to get the Ghosts out
of the seventh, and Dipoto and Paniagua combined on a one-hit eighth to
preserve the 4-0 lead.

John Rocker started the bottom of the eighth for San Jose and was clearly
disturbed by all of the immigrants and queers in Wyoming as he could not
record an out, walking Jones, plunking Davis, and walking Strawberry before
grooving a two-run double to Richard Hidalgo. Billy Taylor relieved Rocker
and was no better, walking Tim Salmon before inducing an Aaron Ledesma
pop-up. Taylor then grooved a pitch to pinchhitter Rondell White, whose
grand slam made the score 10-0. With two more singles, Taylor and Rocker
completed their tour of the Ghost lineup, allowing six runs on four hits,
three walks and a hit batter, while recording one out. They were eventually
rescued by Steve Kline.

The 10-0 lead made the ninth rather anti-climactic as Paniagua and Troy
Percival closed out the Canusius and clinched the Championship Series for
Wyoming.

Gary Gaetti and Darryl Strawberry were the second basemen in this game.
