NATIONAL CONFERENCE ROUTS ALL-STAR GAME 12-1

CASPAR, WYO (IBLP) – The National Conference hammered four fifth inning home runs to grab the lead and never looked back as the Nationals pasted the Americans 12-1.

The game started well for the Americans when Brian Giles, the second batter of the game, took hometown hero Pedro Martinez deep for a 1-0 lead. Martinez, however, settled down, and finished his three inning stretch allowing only that home run and another single, while striking out five.

Kevin Brown of the Americans also got off to a tremendous start. Despite allowing one out baserunners in each of the first two innings, he entered the third with a 1-0 lead. But with two outs, Chipper Jones worked a walk and then stole second base. Carl Everett followed with a double to tie the score.

The fourth inning brought new pitchers: Randy Johnson for the Nationals and Kenny Rogers for the Americans and both worked 1-2-3 fourths. Each, however, got into trouble in the fifth inning. Johnson put the first two men he faced on, on a single by MeMyselfAndI Henderson and a walk to Mike Piazza. Johnson then recovered his stuff and struck out Randy Velarde and Phil Nevin before handing the ball to Tim Hudson. Hudson induced Edgar Martinez to ground weakly in front of Jason Kendall and the AC threat was over.

Rogers also had problems with the first two batters in the fifth, but not the kind of problems you recover from, as Carlos Delgado and Jason Kendall each took him yard to put the Nationals ahead 3-1. In came David Wells, and the punishment continued. Roberto Alomar singled and Jones worked another walk. Pinchhitter Nomar Garciaparra followed with a three run blast and the rout was on. Two outs later, Wells gave up a line drive single to Vladimir Guerrero and yet another shot to Ellis Burks. Despite the near impossibility under IBL rules, Wells fatigued on earned runs as a reliever and it took Jason Grimsley to induce a final out off the bat of Kenny Lofton to stay within seven runs.

From there on out it was gravy for the Nationals as Danny Graves, Jeff Zimmerman, Keith Foulke, Doug Jones and Trevor Hoffman combined to hold the Americans to two hits the rest of the way. The Americans got men to third in the eighth and ninth, but both times with two outs and both times to no avail.

And the Nationals continued to tack runs on. Jeff Bagwell singled home Todd Zeile in the sixth and back to back doubles by Jason Varitek and Magglio Ordonez drove home three more in the eighth.

The most excitement may have come in the ninth, when Juan Gonzalez was sitting on the bench holding his bat in his hands. Boston’s Hoffman wanted him and repeatedly called him out, despite Americans manager Rick Wong’s decision to punish Gonzalez for questioning whether he wanted to be on the team as a reserve. With two outs, Wong decided not to pinchhit for Mark McGwire, so Wagner walked him. Then Wong decided not to hit for John Olerud. Olerud squibbed a grounder to Bagwell at first who “misplayed” it. Finally bringing Gonzalez to the plate, Wagner dispatched the final player with ease, inducing a soft fly ball to center field.

Hudson got the win in his first All Star Game appearance as one of only two pitchers to be perfect, even though he, and the other perfect pitcher, Jones, each only faced one batter. Rogers took the loss for the second year in a row. Garciaparra went 2 for 3 with the three run home run and took home the MVP hardware, narrowly eking out a win over the Fifth Inning.

Home-Run Derby

BONDS, NATIONALS WIN HOME RUN DERBY

CASPAR, WYO (IBLP) - The All Star victory followed a National Conference clean up in the 2000 Home Run Derby. In the team round, the Nationals used five home run performances from Chipper Jones and Barry Bonds to dismantle the Americans 20-15. Jones batted last and needed only one home run for the team win as the Americans were never able to recover from the last place performance posted by home run “champion” Mark McGwire, who only hit one ball out of the yard.

In addition to Jones and Bonds, Jeff Bagwell and Mike Piazza advanced to the semifinals as they hit four homeruns and then won the slug off with fellow four homer gentlemen Juan Gonzalez and Alex Rodriguez.

Piazza’s semifinal performance was shortlived, as he whiffed on five straight attempts to take him out of the competition, ending the role of American Conference batting coach Nelson Lu. The other three semifinalists each hit three bombs, forcing another sudden death round.

Bagwell opened that round with a shot and advanced to the finals. Bonds and Jones then traded punches, remaining tied through five rounds before Bonds finally advanced.

Bonds stayed hot, knocking two out in the finals and Bagwell, apparently worn out in front of the home crowd, had nothing left, as Bonds walked away with the Home Run Derby individual crown.

Pedro Martinez Named to Start for National Conference

CASPAR -- A full half of the NC All-Star roster comes out of the East, the conference’s best division, as hometown star Pedro Martinez was named as the starting pitcher, joining teammate Chipper Jones, Barry Bonds, and Roberto Alomar in the NC starting lineup.  The National Conference team features two Todds as San Diego teammates Todd Zeile and Todd Helton are joined by Weare’s Doug Jones on the squad.

San Diego’s Bonds was the leading vote getter for the National Conference, garnering 17 of 18 votes.  One voter was apparently drunk or was {Rick?} trying to sabotage the NC lineup.  Joining Bonds in the starting outfield are Spokane’s Carl Everett and Colorado’s Vladimir Guerrero.  Weare’s Reggie Sanders and Quebec teammates Kenny Lofton and Larry Walker were named as reserve outfielders.  In a unique tie, Spokane’s Jason Varitek and Las Vegas’s Jason Kendall tied in the catcher voting.  All-star general manager Kevin Greenberg decided to defuse any controversy by selecting both players.  A starter will be named next week.

Jones and Weare’s Alomar will be joined in the starting infield by Colorado’s Carlos Delgado and Seattle’s Alex Rodriguez.  Caspar teammates Jeff Bagwell and Nomar Garciaparra will be reserves in their home park and will be joined by Helton, Zeile, and Boston’s Eric Young.  “I was only disappointed by the election of Ellis Burks,” said the general manager.  Boston’s Burks, a part-time platooner, edged out the more deserving John Jaha of Quebec for the starting designated hitter nod.  “But this is the fan’s game and they have spoken,” Greenberg said.

Martinez, will try to follow up on his 1999 All-Star performance in front of his home fans as the starter and will be followed to the mound by Seattle’s Randy Johnson.  The remaining pitchers are Monterrey rookie Tim Hudson, and relievers Trevor Hoffman (Boston), Keith Foulke (Colorado), Danny Graves (Fargo), Jeff Zimmerman (Quebec), Billy Wagner (San Diego), and Doug Jones (Weare).  “We expect to squash the AC punks in our park,” said Greenberg. “And we’re doing it without stacking the team with freaks.”  "Caspar is a high-altitude, high offense park, like Coors Field and Albequerque, and as the home team we hope we expect to live up to that precedent," added Chipper Jones.

Another (anonymous) manager echoed those opinions.  “We’re going to beat Rick so bad it will remind him of the IBLCS,” he prognosticated.

No NC team is represented by more than four players and half a dozen teams, particularly all of the NC East, Boston, and Colorado, have at least three Allstars.  Additionally, Seattle and Spokane both have two representatives and Seattle’s Ron Belliard was the dreaded 29th man.

Greenberg and Jocelyn Labbe will be co-managers.  Dave Menard has been invited to serve as bench coach and Dave Darby has been invited to be the third base coach and John Lemek has been offered the first base line.  Don Singleton will be our rules expert and Chris Hartjes has been invited to be bullpen coach, where he can supervise Monrovia’s All-Star representative, bullpen catcher Magglio Ordonez.
