PORTLAND ROOKIE THROWS NO-HITTER
(AP) Portland Gryphons rookie Kris Benson threw a no-hitter in
Portland's 2-0 win in the first game of their series with the Albuquerque
Thunderbirds. Benson walked only two and faced two batters over the minimum
in the first no-hitter in Portland history.
Benson was helped in his cause by Kevin Stocker, who had a crucial
RBI single in the fifth and turned Mike Bordick's line drive into a double play
to end the game. Interviewed after the game, Benson said "Wow. This has
never happened to me before." In other similarly banal quotes, Benson praised
Stocker and Phil Nevin, who made a brilliant play in the hole to take away
a hit from Dave Magadan in the seventh.
Portland GM/Manager Joel Roberts was more cautious in his praise.
"Kris pitched a heck of a game. You have to keep in mind, though, that a good
high school righthander could hold that Thunderbird lineup to three runs."
Asked to reconcile Albuquerque's vaunted offensive prowess at home with their
complete collapse at the Gryphon's Nest, Roberts couldn't come up with
an answer. "I don't know," he replied. "There must be something in the
New Mexico water."
