Nineteen Strike Outs in 7-1 Win for Series MVP
CASPAR, WY (IBLP) -- Pedro Martinez overwhelmed the Capitol City Fruit Bats,
striking out 11 in a row and 19 overall to lead the Ghosts to a 7-1 win and
back-to-back IBL crowns.
Martinez struck out the side in the first and never looked back as a three
run home run by Chipper Jones in the bottom of the first staked him to a
lead he never relinquished. The Ghost offense tacked on four more runs
after that, but those runs were not needed as Martinez was absolutely
dominant after allowing a second inning run on three Fruit Bat singles.
Martinez bounced back to retire seven in a row before giving up singles to
Manny Martinez and Ray Lankford in the fifth. He then struck out Sean Casey
and Manny Ramirez to end the last Fruit Bat threat. He continued to roll
on, stringing three batter K-K-K innings together in the sixth, seventh and
eighth to run his string to 11 straight batters. The Fruit Bats got off the
snide in the ninth with a single by Dave Nilsson to fatigue Martinez.
However the next batter, Ken Caminiti, grounded into a double play and
Martinez fanned Paquette for his 19th strikeout and the IBL crown.
Martinez was named the unanimous IBLCS MVP for his dominant performances in
games 2 and 7. The IBL crown was the Ghosts’ second straight and marks the
first two-time champion in IBL history.

7-6 Victory Forces a Millwood-Martinez Game Seven
Caspar, WY (IBLP) -- After blowing a 6-1 lead, behind a ninth-inning lead
off double by Sean Casey, the Fruit Bats scored in the ninth for a 7-6 lead.
Three Fruit Bat pitchers shut down the Ghosts in the ninth to force a
seventh game.
Manny Ramirez singled in Dave Nilsson in the first, Ray Lankford singled in
Sean Casey in the third, and the Fruit Bats broke out with three fourth
inning runs led by doubles by Ken Caminiti and Chuck Knoblauch to give Kevin
Brown a 5-1 lead. Manny Ramirez tripled in the fifth and scored on a
Caminiti single to stretch the lead to 6-1.
Ghost power got the home team back in the game as David Justice hit a three
run home run in the fifth and Nomar Garciaparra hit a solo shot in the sixth
to cut the lead to 6-5.
The Ghosts tied the game in the seventh when pinchrunner Brian Hunter stole
second, took third on an infield single and scored on a deep sacrifice fly
off the bat of Paul O’Neill.
Each team singled in the eighth, but could not advance the runner to second.
Casey led off the ninth with a double off of Chuck Finley. Finley then
unintentionally walked the next two batters to put pinchrunner Brent Gates
at third. Jose Cabrera then relieved Finley, but allowed a Ramirez
sacrifice fly before ending the inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, Brian Hunter bunted into an out off of Steve
Schrenk, Rich Amaral grounded to short off of Mike Munoz, and, after a
Chipper Jones walk, pinchhitter Tony Graffanino flew to center off of Steve
Reed. Schrenk was credited with the win and Reed the save. Finley took the
loss.

8-4 Victory Sends Series to Game 6 in Wyoming
CAPITOL CITY, OH (IBLP) -- The Fruit Bats took a 4-3 lead in the fifth
inning and added four more in the seventh to win game 5 8-4 despite
relinquishing two early leads. The victory, only the second of the
postseason at home for the Bats, sends the series back to Wyoming for game
6.
Manny Ramirez homered in the first and Dave Nilsson drove an RBI single in
the third to give the Fruit Bats two early leads. Paul Abbott struggled,
however, allowing a single run in the second and a two-run Tim Salmon home
run in the fourth, and the Ghosts lead 3-2 after four.
In the fifth, Sean Casey doubled and eventually scored on a Ray Lankford
single, and Lankford himself came around on a walk and a Ken Caminiti single
to take a 4-3 lead.
Abbott then settled down and struck out seven of eight hitters including all
six outs in the fifth and sixth innings. Down one, the Ghosts handed the
ball to Pedro Martinez who proceeded to light a fire under the Fruit Bat
offense. Singles by Ramirez and Nilsson were followed by doubles by Ray
Lankford and Craig Paquette and Paquette later scored on a Manny Martinez
single to stretch the lead to 8-3.
Kevin Brown relieved in the eighth inning, and although he allowed one run
to score, the Ghosts never seriously threatened the lead.
This start was Eric Gagne’s third of the series and was his third
disappointing outing, although it was only his second loss. Abbott took the
win. There was no save.

Capital City, OH (IBLP) -- Chuck Finley will get his first postseason start
for the Ghosts against Kevin Millwood, who will attempt to bounce back on
short rest. Game 5, and possibly 6, will follow. Eric Gagne is scheduled
to make his third start of the series in game 5, having Rick Ankiel'ed his
first two opportunities. Capital City will have several options for a game
5 starter.
GHOSTS OFFENSE POWER 9-5 GAME 4 WIN TO TAKE SERIES CONTROL
Capitol City, OH (IBLP) – Behind home runs from Darryl Strawberry, Chipper
Jones and Steve Finley, the Caspar Ghosts racked up nine runs on fourteen
hits to defeat Kevin Millwood in a game that was closer than its 9-5 score.
With the win, the Ghosts grabbed a 3-1 series lead and put the Fruit Bats on
the verge of elimination.
Millwood was in trouble from the outset as the first two batters of the game
doubled and Strawberry followed with a two-run blast. The Fruit Bats closed
the gap with single runs in the second and third to cut the lead to 3-2.
Jeff Bagwell opened the fourth with a triple to center. Attempting to field
the ball, Brady Anderson crashed into the wall and was lost for
approximately 10 days, ending the center fielder’s stellar season. Three
batters later, Chipper Jones hit a three-run home run and the lead was 6-2.
Ghosts starter Chuck Finley ran into serious trouble in the fifth as a
rally, capped by a triple by Rey Sanchez, cut the Ghosts lead back to one
run at 6-5. But, with reliever Jerry Dipoto in the game, new centerfielder
Manny Martinez and second baseman Brent Gates couldn’t drive Sanchez in to
tie the game.
Both bullpens pitched well at first, but Jeff Bagwell doubled in a run in
the eighth and Finley homered in two more in the ninth to give the Ghosts
the 9-5 win. Caspar’s bullpen was again masterful, holding the Fruit Bats
to just two hits in 4.2 innings of work. Dipoto got the win and Millwood
took the loss. There was no save.

Capitol City, OH (IBLP) -- Back home, where the curse of Ron Gant haunts the
Fruit Bats, both starters struggled early and, after yeoman work by the
"extra starters", the tail of the Bat pen collapsed and the Ghosts claimed a
12-4 win.
Bat starter Paul Abbott got in trouble early in the first as Darryl
Strawberry walked with one out and went to third on a Chipper Jones single
and error by Ken Caminiti. After Jeff Bagwell failed to score Strawberry
and Jones, manager Scott Cantor took a chance and intentionally walked Nomar
Garciaparra. The move backfired as Jeff Kent walked to "drive in" a run and
Tim Salmon followed with a grand slam.
Down 5-0, the Fruit Bats roared back with two outs in the bottom of the
first off of Eric Gagne, on singles by Sean Casey and Manny Ramirez, a
double by Dave Nilsson, and a two run deep fly home run by Craig Paquette
closed the gap to 5-4.
Abbott and Gagne survived the second but gave way in the third inning to
Scott Erickson and Alex Fernandez, respectively. Gagne had also left game 1
early.
Things quieted down as Erickson and Andy Ashby kept the Ghosts off the board
through the sixth inning. Fernandez, Chris Peters, and Jerry Dipoto did the
same to the Fruit Bats.
In the top of the seventh, David Justice walked with one out and pinchrunner
Brian Hunter stole his way to third. Chipper Jones walked, but Jeff Bagwell
struck out and Nomar Garciaparra flied to center to keep the game 5-4.
Then Chuck Knoblauch threw the first batted ball of the eighth inning into
the dugout. Salmon singled Kent home and then, after a hit batter and a
double play ground out, Salmon scored a second unearned run on Brian
Hunter's bunt single to make the score 7-4.
The Ghosts kept up the pressure in the ninth, and tacked on five more, three
of which were earned, on a collection of short hits. The two unearned runs
scored when Knoblauch again threw a ball into the dugout.
Meanwhile, the Ghost pen was stymieing the Fruit Bats. Fernandez, Peters,
Dipoto, Mike Remlinger, and Rudy Seanez combined to hold the Bats to two
hits and one intentional walk over the final seven innings. Fernandez was
credited with the victory. There was no save.

Caspar, WY (IBLP) -- Just three days after dominating the final game of the
NC Championship Series, Pedro Martinez threw seven innings of no-hit
baseball before turning a 2-0 lead over to his bullpen and the Ghosts held
onto win 2-0 and tie the series.
Kevin Brown was almost as dominating, but allowed one run in the fifth when
Mike Redmond singled home Jeff Kent, who had tripled with two outs, and
again in the sixth when Chipper Jones homered to right field. The two runs
were enough for the Ghosts as Martinez struck out 13 and held the Fruit Bats
without a hit through seven innings.
The Bats had their chances though, as Martinez walked seven Bats in the
first six innings. This included walking the bases loaded in the fifth and
putting two on, with only one out, in the second.
Despite being fatigued due to the short rest, the Jones homer allowed
Martinez to stay in in the seventh and, tired, he fanned Ken Caminiti, Rey
Sanchez and Brady Anderson in the top of the seventh.
Leading off the eighth, Chuck Knoblauch grounded to Nomar Garciaparra, but
Jeff Bagwell bobbled his throw. With the tying run at the plate, Martinez
gave way to Chris Peters. Pinchhitter Butch Huskey beat out a dribbler to
second base for the Bats' first (and only hit) of the night. But Troy
Percival struck out pinchhitter Terry Steinbach and Manny Ramirez and Mike
Remlinger induced pinchhitter Kevin Sefcik to fly lazily to center to end
the final Fruit Bat threat.
Alex Fernandez got one out in the ninth and Jose Cabrera retired two Bats to
record the save.
Brown limited the Ghosts to just six hits and struck out five while throwing
all eight innings in the loss.

(Caspar, WY) The Capital City Fruit Bats defeated the favored Caspar Ghosts,
defending IBL champions, 6-0 behind Kevin Millwood's eight shutout innings
and an opportunistic offense that took advantage of a pair of Caspar errors
by SS Nomar Garciaparra and 2B Jeff Kent to score 6 unearned runs.
Garciaparra opened the road 3rd by booting and bobbling Ken Caminiti's liner,
opening the door for a three hit inning that gave CAP a 3-0 lead. Millwood
made it stand up with 10 strikeouts, scattering 9 hits and a walk, and
retiring Jeff Bagwell in a pair of 2 on, 2 out situations. A Jeff Kent error
in the 6th led to 3 more runs and the Fruit Bats coasted home with a 6-0
road win.
CAP is now 6-0 on the road in the postseason, but faces the ultimate test to
go 7-0 against monster demon pitcher from Hades, Pedro Martinez. Cy Young

CASPAR, WY (IBLP) -- With a 5-4 win in the fifth game of the American Conference Championship series, the Capital City Fruit Bats advanced to the IBL Championship Series aganist the waiting Caspar Ghosts. Game 1 and possibly 2 are scheduled for 9 pm Eastern time on Thursday night. Although neither manager has yet named their starters, it is widely expected that the game 1 pitchers will be Kevin Brown for the visitors and Eric Gagne for the Ghosts. Management of both teams have authorized public congratulations on fine seasons to Philadelphia, Seattle, and the rest of the playoff teams.
