CAP admits to "irregularities", still wins 8-4 on recount

After rumors began circulating, CAP management admitted to "irregularities"
in its lineup for Game 7 Wednesday night. Despite his protests that he was
perfectly capable of passing for a major league third baseman ("I got it all
over that Tatis fool any day!"), Craig Paquette wasn't fooling PAD or the
commissioner's office.
Upon review, the Monrovia Supreme Court ordered a recount...er, replay of
Game 7. The CAP GM proceeded to fire the manager for the second time this
series and asked Kevin Brown if he'd be willing to come back on 0 days rest
and start for the 4th time in 9 days. "Sure, my contract's guaranteed," he
replied.
The big man threw six more innings of 2-run ball to win the rematch by an
identical score of 8-4. In a reversal from the disqualified game, the Fruit
Bats' top three hitters reached base 9 times (compared to once), and home
runs from Nilsson, Ramirez, and Paquette (safely ensconced at DH) powered
the CAP offense to an early need they never relinquished.

The Palo Alto Devils rebounded from a sweep of three games at home to stave
off elimination and tie their playoff series with the Capital City Fruit
Bats at 3 games all. Making themselves at home again in the October cold,
the Devils jumped out to another early lead behind a Greg Vaughn homer off
of starter Paul Abbott.
They would go up 4-0 in the 5th inning, but riding the momentum of a key
outfield assist from Kevin "noodles" Sefcik, the Fruit Bats would plate 3 in
the home 5th, and tie the game in the 8th on a Sean Casey double.
Alas for the home team, the Devils would push across a run in the 10th off
of Mikes Trombley and Munoz, and win it behind Game 2 hero Jason Schmidt and
Buddy Groom, who worked out of a 2-on jam and avoided a near series-ending
double by Sean Casey and a possible error by Rich Aurilia.
After 6 games, the series is even, the home teams are winless, and two games
have gone extra innings. Tired 25 game winner and Cy Young candidate Kevin
Brown faces Armando Reynoso in the deciding game Thursday evening.

After coming home with such great promise of a 2-0 lead, the Devils proceeded
to shoot blanks against a rejuvenated Kevin Brown, who pitched a complete game
6-hitter and limited the Devils to one run. Meanwhile, the Fruit Bats pounded
out 14 hits to score 8 runs to cruise to an easy victory. Every CAP starter
got on base at least once.
Game 4:
More pitching disaster, as Game 2 hero Jason Schmidt turned into a goat, chased
after just getting one out. The bullpen didn't fare better, as the Fruit Bats
pounded out 15 hits, including 4 HRs, to score 11 runs. Kevin Millwood limited
the Devils to 2 runs on 3 hits (two of which were solo homers) to pick up the
complete game victory.

Game One:
Central Ohio showers delayed the start of the first playoff game in Fruit
Bats history, but the big story was the practical joke, a uniform switch
between Kevin Brown and Andy Ashby. The manager, not in on the joke, was the
ultimate butt of it when instead of simply telling Kevin Brown to head out
to the mound, he walked out with the player in Brown's uniform. Having
"announced" his starter, the umpires required Ashby to continue.
Kevin Ashby proceeded to allow 9 hits and 8 runs in the first inning,
including 4 doubles, a triple, and a home run, ending the game before the
fans had time to sit down. By the time Andy Brown was able to warm up, the
contest was decided, a 4-run sixth inning notwithstanding. Brown pitched a
solid seven innings of relief, allowing a single run, to help save the staff
for the series.
After numerous rulings by league officials, the statistics will be credited
to the announced players, rather than the actual players, and subsequent
rest handled similarly, allowing the rubber-armed Brown to come back on one
day of rest for Game Three in Palo Alto.
In unrelated news, the Fruit Bats' manager was fired after the game due to
"philosophical differences" with the GM.

Game Two:
After losing the series opener and replacing the manager, the Fruit Bats
came out firing on all cylinders, scoring 6 runs in the first two innings
off of Kenny Rogers. The team knew it would need runs behind Kevin Millwood,
who was diagnosed before the game with Attention Deficit Disorder, the
reason he loses focus almost every game and serves up meatballs that a
grandmother could take yard.
Coincidentally, Todd Hundley brought the Devils back to within a run on a
pair of home runs, including a grand slam. After poking across a few
insurance runs, the Fruit Bats looked to be in position to tie up the series
when swing man Paul Abbott served up a Swedish delicacy of his own to Robin
Ventura. Chuck Knoblauch put the Bats ahead in the bottom of the seventh,
but Derek Lowe shut down the threat.
After Ventura worked Onan Masaoka for a walk in the road ninth, Edgard
Clemente delivered a setup double off of Mike Munoz. Jason Schmidt, bunter
extraordinaire, squeezed home the tying run, and a multitude of bizarre
defensive subsitutions later, Schmidt and Lowe had both played shortstop and
Schmidt would pick up the save in the tenth inning.
After losing both games at home on numerous park hits, Fruit Bats management
was heard to say that there would be radical changes to the team's home park
after the season. Upon being informed that the team had already made changes
last season and would not be permitted to make such changes again,
management replied "Yeah, well, we'll see what my cousin in waste management
has to say about that!"
