2000 AC Division Series
Williamstown vs. Philadelphia
Game One
The Philadelphia Phantasm quickly got into the holiday spirit on
Thursday night, putting up a snowman in the second inning en route
to a 10-3 victory in the opening game of their division series
against the Williamstown Thunder.
Juan Gonzalez started the rally with a solo homer to left field
off starter Bartolo Colon. One out later, a Rich Becker base on
balls was followed by consecutive singles by Ivan Rodriguez and Dave
Berg. An Eric Owens flyout would be the last out recorded by Colon,
as Bill Mueller followed with an RBI single and Erubiel Durazo
clobbered a three-run shot into the right field bleachers. Reliever
Danny Kolb was no more effective, allowing a walk and three singles
before recording the final out.
The eight-run outburst proved to be plenty of support for Phantasm
ace Curt Schilling, who scattered eleven hits over eight innings for
the victory. John Wasdin pitched the ninth, bringing the ecstatic
Phantasm crowd to its feet by striking out the side. "I was really
pumped up," said Wasdin after the game. "It was our first playoff
game since moving to Philadelphia, and the fans were really into it."
Bill Mueller led the Phantasm attack with five hits and three RBI,
while Darren Fletcher stroked three hits and Mike Sweeney added a
pair of RBI doubles for the Thunder.
Game Two
Williamstown jumped out to an early lead on Friday night against
Phantasm starter Bret Saberhagen. Bill Mueller's error led to an
unearned run in the first, and Preston Wilson smacked a towering
home run to left-center in the second. Meanwhile, Thunder starter
Gil Heredia outfoxed the Phantasm hitters, nicking corner after
corner with his fastball and changeup. Heredia worked out of jams by
striking out Juan Gonzalez looking in the first, striking out Luis
Castillo looking in the third, and catching Gonzalez looking again in
the fifth. Each time there were two runners on.
By that time, the Thunder offense had padded the lead behind a
three-run outburst in the fifth. Doubles by Mike Sweeney and Tony
Batista were followed by another long home run by Wilson to make the
score 5-1. The Phantasm bullpen began warming up in a hurry as
Saberhagen allowed another double to Wally Joyner, but he then settled
down and got out of the inning.
The Phantasm offense came to life against Heredia in the sixth.
With one out, six of the next seven batters stroked hits, capped by
a David Dellucci two-run ground ball double just over the first base
bag to give Philadelphia the lead. The Phantasm added an insurance
run in the seventh inning, then two more in the eighth on a two-run
double by Juan Gonzalez.
The Thunder were not finished, though. Mike Sweeney led off the
ninth with a double, his fourth in the two games. Two quick outs had
the fans on their feet, but an RBI single by Preston Wilson and another
single by Wally Joyner kept the game alive. Doug Brocail, obviously
tiring, gave way to John Johnstone to face Dean Palmer, who represented
the tying run. Palmer sent the first pitch in a high arc to left field,
eliciting gasps throughout the stadium, but as the ball settled into
Eric Owens's glove short of the warning track, the crowd murmured
a collective sigh of relief.
Erubiel Durazo led the Phantasm attack with four hits. Tony Batista
stroked two RBI doubles and two singles for Williamstown, and Preston
Wilson added a walk and an RBI single to go with his two home runs.
