AC Lineup card v Pedro Martinez
|
COLUMBUS, OH --
AC Champion Capital City Fruit Bats owner/GM/manager Scott Cantor
announced the 2001 American Conference All-Star roster this evening, and
it was a balanced affair representing the mediocrity parity in the
conference this season.
In fan voting, marred by the Bordick ballot-stuffing incident, the
starting lineup shaped up with:
C Mike Piazza (MCM)
1B Jason Giambi (PAD)
2B Edgardo Alfonzo (GSL)
3B Phil Nevin (POR)
SS Mike Bordick (ABQ)
LF Gary Sheffield (STL)
CF Brian Giles (GSL)
RF Mark Kotsay (POR)
DH Jim Edmonds (STL)
Backup catchers will be Ivan Rodriguez (PHI) and Mike Lieberthal (STL).
Backing up the infield are Sean Casey (CAP), Mike Sweeney (WMS), Edgar
Martinez (PAD), Jose Vidro (TRI), and Barry Larkin (SJC).
Backup outfielders include Shannon Stewart (WMS), Ken Griffey (MCM), and
Ryan Klesko (MCM).
Starting on the mound for the AC squad will be right-hander Kevin Brown
(CAP) from the defending champs. When asked why he passed over younger
lefties Mike Sirotka (GSL) and Bruce Chen (SJC), both with better ERAs,
Cantor mumbled something about Brown having more innings, and eventually
implied it was Randy Wolf's fault and they could complain to him.
Both southpaw starters were named to the pitching staff however, along
with fellow lefty Tom Glavine (BOW), Roger Clemens (STL), and Ryan
Dempster (POR). Rounding out the bullpen are Nelson Cruz (POR), carrying
in a 6-0 record and a microscopic 0.89 ERA, and the Motor City closer
duo of fireballing Robb Nen (MCM) with 60 strikeouts in 36.2 innings,
and Mariano Rivera (MCM).
Central-leading Motor City led the way with 5 selections, followed by
Portland and St Louis with 4 each. Cantor indicated the player from each
team requirement was not a problem. "There are no Brent Maynes on this
team." When reporters pointed out there were no Pedros, Randys, Barrys,
or Nomars either, he reacted angrily and threw his spit bucket at them.
A league spokesman later announced the AC coaching staff in a prepared
statement. Rusty Peltz was named pitching coach, Cantor citing his
amazing work with Curt Schilling over the last two seasons. "He's just
not the same pitcher anymore." Sean Sweda will serve as batting coach.
"Look at the numbers those stiffs put up. Anybody who can get those
kinds of results from a lineup full of journeymen is doing something
right."
The bullpen coach will be Joel Roberts, Cantor tersely noting "Nelson
Cruz. 'nuff said." Coaching first base will be Nelson Lu. "I don't know
how he does it, but every time a guy reaches first base, they seem to
get really good leads. Something about his chatter seems to really push
those guys to be aggressive in getting down to second."
Rounding out the coaches at third base is Rick Rockett, who won't be
making the trip, but is sending a cardboard cutout that continuously
gives the "Hit and Run" sign to any player at bat, on both teams.
Six Ghosts Headline NC Roster
|
PHILADELPHIA, PA (IBLP) -- The National Conference offices released the NC
All-Star team today and howls of favortism rebounded as NC and Caspar Ghost
manager Kevin Greenberg selected five Ghosts as reserves, bringing the
number of Ghosts on the team to a league-high six players in a game to be
played in their own park.
Already elected as starters (in order of votes received) were Jeff Kent,
Vladimir Guerrero, Bobby Higginson, Barry Bonds, Carlos Delgado, Travis
Fryman, Jason Kendall, Bernie Williams and Alex Rodriguez. Pedro Martinez
will join them in the starting lineup as the pitcher.
Backup infielders for the NC will be Jeff Bagwell, Rafael Furcal, Miguel
Tejada, Nomar Garciaparra, Chipper Jones, and Adrian Beltre. Backup
outfielders are J.D. Drew, Richard Hidalgo, and Magglio Ordonez. Jorge
Posada is the back-up catcher.
Other pitchers named to the staff are Randy Johnson, who pitched two innings
for the NC last year, Tony Armas, Jeff D’Amico, Al Leiter, Tim Hudson,
Arthur Rhodes, and Keith Foulke.
Ghosts Martinez, Kent, Garciaparra, Jones, Bagwell, and Hidalgo give the
defending champion Ghosts six All-Stars. Las Vegas has five players on the
team as Kendall, Higginson, Furcal and Rhodes join the recently-acquired
Fryman. Colorado has four representatives (Delgado, Guerrero, Posada, and
Foulke) and Weare has three (Williams, D’Amico, and Leiter). Western
division powerhouses Seattle (Rodriguez and Johnson) and Monrovia (Armas and
Ordonez) each have two representatives on the team.
Every other team has a single representative. Quebec’s Brent Mayne is the
backup catcher and the sole player named to the team to ensure league-wide
representation. He will serve as the Magglio Ordonez Memorial Bullpen
Catcher.
In other news, Greenberg named Don Singleton was named honorary NC captain
for the game and tabbed John Lemek, Todd Morgan, Dave Varty, Larry Selleck,
and Dave Menard as coaches. Chris Hartjes was named towel boy.
The 28-man American Conference roster will be named Saturday by the AC
league office. The game will be played Sunday night at 9:00 Eastern. A
home run contest will take place on Saturday night if an NC owner is
interested in managing the team while the game manager takes in a Phillies
game.
2001 All-Star Ballot
The 2001 IBL All Star game will be played after week 15 of the 2001 IBL
Schedule.
IBL Owners, co-owners, and associates are invited to vote. Ballots
are due no later than midnight EST on Wednesday, September 19th. Starters
will be announced soon afterwards.
All-star managers Kevin Greenberg (NC) and Scott Cantor (AC) will choose
roster reserves, pitching staffs and the DH's. All AC and NC outfielders
are placed together and not split by conference. Stats are from
Wk12.
