Perfect Game for Pedro!
Pedro Martinez twirled 13 strikeouts on the way to a perfect game against
the Boston Buzzards. Martinez struck out pinch-hitter Jose Canseco for the
final out in the 1-0 win in a game replayed due to a stupid misreading of a
MIS by Ghosts manager Kevin Greenberg.
The Buzzards failed to convert two deep flies, including one off the bat of
Troy Glaus, who has excellent power in the eighth inning. But those were
the only close plays as Martinez needed to convert only one range play and
three error rolls -- two for his own 10 and one for his first baseman Jeff
Bagwell. None of the rolls were close.
The Ghosts barely got their run as Buzzards starter Freddy Garcia was
masterful as well, holding the Ghosts hitless through five innings, although
he did walk a few batters. Chipper Jones led off the sixth with a double
and two baters later was singled in by Steve Finley. A second potential
Ghosts run was cut down at the plate later in the inning. The sixth inning
hits by Jones and Finley were the only two hits of the game.
