Motor City had not won a playoff series since they lost in the
IBLCS to Weare in 1996, but now find themselves once again playing
for the IBL Championship. Alan Trammell and the Marauders would like
to congratulate the Devils on a fine season and exciting playoff
series.
Game 6
The Marauders returned home to play game 6 up 3-2 in the series, but
without the services of Mariano Rivera who informed Trammell that he
had pitched too much in game 5.

The Marauders jumped on Chuck Finley in the first, with Alex Ochoa
delivering a 2-run single and Fernando Tatis following that up with an
RBI single that just barely got over the glove of the second baseman.
Shane Reynolds couldn't hold the lead though, as Stan Javier hit a
solo shot in the 3rd and Edgar Martinez singled in two more runs later
that inning. With both starters yanked early, the two bullpens dueled
it out once again. As was the case throughout the series, the
Marauders bullpen was the difference in the game. Five Motor City
relievers combined to shut out the Devils over the final 6 innings.
Edgar Renteria plated the go-ahead run with a two-out single off
Almanzar, and Frank Thomas added an insurance run with a double off
Lowe (with Quilvio Veras being thrown out at the plate). Series MVP
Robb Nen retired the last 6 batters, including striking out the side
in the top of the 9th.
Game 5
The Devils had a 5-0 lead early, and continued to hold onto a 5-2 lead, when
the bullpen simply collapsed in the 7th -- 8 straight Marauders reached base
and scored 6 runs, giving the Marauders a 8-5 lead that they would not
relinquish and pushing the Devils to the brink of elimination. Mariano Rivera,
Kelly Wunsch, and ex-Devil Robb Nen combined for 6.1 innings of scoreless
relief to hold the Devils off, and Mike Piazza homered twice for the Marauders.

Game 4:
The Marauders jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but after that it was all
Devils, as the Devils scored 16 straight runs and held on for a 16-5 win.
Every Devil starter had a hit, and Palo Alto got homers from Edgar Martinez,
Greg Vaughn, and Melvin Mora. The game was costly for both teams, as the
Marauders' Tyler Houston and the Devils' Randy Velarde suffered series-ending
injuries. Houston would be out until Game 7 of the IBLCS (if the Marauders
advance), while Velarde would be out until Game 2 of the IBLCS (if the Devils
advance).

Game 3:
The game started out as a pitcher's duel, as the starting pitchers Shane
Reynolds and Rolando Arrojo kept each other's team off balance, but in the
6th the Marauders broke through with 4 runs on two singles and two doubles
and held on for a 6-2 win. Edgar Renteria paced the Marauders with two hits,
including a triple. The Devils got a solo homer from Greg Vaughn.

This time the Devils jumped out to the early lead, with 6 of the first 7
batter reaching base against Dan Reichert, keyed by a 2-run homer by
Jim Edmonds. Chuck Finley held the Motor City bats at bay for 6
strong innings, before tiring in the 7th and allowing a 2-run shot by
Frank Thomas to cut the lead to 4-3. Derek Lowe came in to pitch the
8th, but a Robin Ventura error was followed by two singles and the
Marauders tied up the ballgame. Motor City manager Alan Trammell then
blundered by calling on Tim Wakefield for the top of the 9th instead
of closer Robb Nen. Wakefield was touched for back-to-back homers by
an unlikely tandem of Stan Javier and Randy Velarde (both FR power DF
homers). The Marauders had a shot to tie the game in the bottom of
the 9th, but Fernando Tatis' drive to right fell short at the warning
track. Joe Slusarski picked up the win, bailing Lowe out of a jam in
the 8th by inducing Frank Thomas to ground into a double-play.

Poor defense hurt both teams early, as the Marauders plated
three unearned runs in the first after a Melvin Mora bobble,
and the Devils got two of their own due to an Edgar Renteria
miscue in the third. The Devils took a brief 5-4 lead when
a Geoff Blum single scored Todd Hundley, but the Marauders
took the lead for good in the bottom half on a 2-run homer
by Ken Griffey. Ben Grieve put the game out of reach in
the 7th, with a 3-run shot off Carlos Almanzar. Griffey was
injured stealing second in that same inning, and was forced
out of the next 2 games of the series. Mariano Rivera got
the win, getting two crucial outs in the 4th when the Devils
had the bases loaded.
