MCM sweeps COU to advance to IBLCS
Game 1
Carlos Zambrano dominated the Marauders, as he was perfect through 5 innings before allowing a single baserunner to reach by error in the 6th. His teammates staked him to a 3-0 lead, scoring once in the 5th on an RBI groundout by Julio Lugo, and getting 2 more in the 6th on a costly 2-base error on MCM firstbaseman Justin Morneau with the bases loaded. In the 7th the Marauders finally got their first hit, which sparked a huge 5-run rally to take the lead. Morneau atoned for his error with a clutch 2-out, 2-run single off Cougar reliever Frankie Cordero, and later 2 more runs would score on bases loaded walks to Ryan Klesko and Lew Ford. The Marauders tacked on a couple of insurance runs in the 8th and rode stellar relief pitching from Brad Lidge and J.C. Romero to a 7-3 victory.

Game 2
Rain postponed the originally scheduled game, so it was played on the travel day. Surprisingly, Motor City manager Alan Trammell elected to bypass his ace, Johan Santana, who potentially could have started because of the rainout. Instead, Trammell went with Bruce Chen who was simply fabulous, shutting out the Cougars for 8 innings while allowing only 5 baserunners. The Cougars had a tough break when they lost starting pitcher Joe Kennedy for the series after he slammed his hand in the dugout in frustration after having trouble in the 4th inning. The Marauders iced the game by scoring 4 runs in the 6th, extending the lead to 5-0. The key blows were a 2-run single by David Newhan, followed by RBI singles from Marcos Scutaro and Nick Johnson. Game 3
The Cougars returned home in a huge hole, down 2-0 and facing Marauders ace Johan Santana. Unfortunately for the Cougars Santana was dominant, going the distance while striking out 15 and allowing only one run, a solo shot off the bat of Magglio Ordonez. The Marauders jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first, as the first 4 batters got hits off COU starter Roy Oswalt, the last being a 2-run single from David Bell. The Marauders added 3 more in the 2nd when Ryan Klesko doubled in two runs and Lew Ford followed with an RBI single. Oswalt settled down after that, but the damage was done and the Marauders cruised to an easy 7-1 win.

Game 4
Both teams brought back their game 1 starters in game 4, however neither would make it into the 6th as a see-saw battle was eventually decided by the bullpens. The Cougars struck first on a Cory Patterson solo shot off Brad Penny in the 2nd. The Marauders tied it up in the 4th when Ryan Klesko doubled in Edgar Renteria. Penny didn't make it out of the 5th, but gave up the lead before he left when he uncorked a wild pitch which scored Patterson. With a slim 2-1 lead and a tiring Zambrano on the hill, the Cougars went to Mike Gonzalez. Once again Gonzalez struggled against MCM, this time allowing an RBI single by Klesko in the 6th and back-to-back doubles in the 7th by David Bell and Mike Piazza. When J.C. Romero got into trouble in the bottom of the 6th, Brad Lidge came in and got a couple of huge outs stranding runners at 2nd and 3rd. Frankie Cordero, who had pulled a similar trick for the Cougars bailing out Gonzalez in the 7th, had no such luck in the 8th, as the two runners he left on base were allowed to score by Armando Benitez. David Bell drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single, and Ken Griffey followed that up with a sacrifice fly. The insurance run provided by Griffey was huge, because Mariano Rivera allowed a leadoff triple in the 9th to Jamey Carroll, followed by an RBI double from Brian Giles which cut the lead to 1 run. However, Rafael Betancourt came in to shut the door, striking out the side and ending the Cougars season.

Motor City reliever Brad Lidge was selected as series MVP, getting wins while recording huge outs with runners on base in both games 1 and 4.
