Weare, NH -
The 1997 IBL All-Star Game was held Monday night here in Weare, NH at
the Wolf Den, home of the IBL Champion Weare Wolves. While interleeague
play did not see a repeat of last years championship series between Weare
and Motor City, their respective managers got to duke it out Monday night.
Last years's contest was an offensive brawl as the NC team opened up
an 8-0 lead after 4 innings and held on for an 8-6 win. This year saw
a rematch of the starters - Pat Hentgen for the AC and Greg Maddux for
the NC. Hentgen stunk up the joint last year, giving up 7 runs on 6
hits and 3 HBP in one inning before getting pulled sometime in the 2nd.
As such, the fans in New Hampshire were looking for another drubbing.
A very different game unfolded though. Hentgen faced the minimum
through his two innings of work thanks to a double play in the second.
Maddux also faired well only allowing a walk to Jim Thome in the first
and a pinch hit double to Jay Buhner in the third. The NC stars almost
picked up a pair of runs in the third, but didn't. Ray Durham led
off with a single past Thome and tried to steal second. It looked like
he was out and AC shortstop Barry Larkin blew up at the ump. After a
pair of fly balls, Gary Sheffield drove one deep down the leftfield line
off Roger Clemens but it didn't quite have the distance(needed to roll
a 10+ but got an 02).
Potential disaster struck in the fourth when Terry Mulholland splintered
Brady Anderson's bat. The head went flying off and pegged Alex Rodriguez
who was removed for safety reasons. Anderson doubled but was left stranded
when Bernard Gilkey grounded out. Meanwhile, Curt Schilling managed to
shut the NC team down through the 5th and 6th, only allowing a walk each
inning. Pedro Martinez, Al Leiter, and Hideo Nomo shut down the AC team
through the 7th.
In the bottom of the 7th though, with one out, Bruce Ruffin fell apart.
Wade Boggs pinch hit for Dave Hollins and worked Ruffin for a walk. Barry
Bonds came on to pinch hit for Ray Durham and deposited Ruffin's first
pitch in the bleachers for a 2-0 NC lead. But, the AC wasn't done. After
Billy Wagner hit Jose Offerman to lead off the 8th, Frank Thomas pinch hit
for Jim Thome. Chan Ho Park came on to face Thomas and left a fastball
in his wheelhouse to tie the game at 2. After a walk to Mark McGwire,
Ken Griffey saved the NC from further trouble by grounding into a double
play and Todd Hundley sturck out.
Former Wolf, Kevin Brown, came on to start the bottom of the 8th and
gave up a one out walk to Jeff Bagwell, setting up the heroics of Brady
Anderson who took Brown(his soon to be teammate) out of the park for a
4-2 NC lead. Troy Percival and Mark Wohlers pitched the 9th for the NC
squad to close it out.
After the game, Brady Anderson was named the game's MVP with his 3 for
4 performance and GWRBI. Kevin Brown was heard to say, "I hate pitching
here. I got roughed up in 1995 when I was here, I got roughed up two
weeks ago when we played the Wolves, and I got roughed up tonight. Brady
came over to me before the game and told me he was going to take me yard
if he faced me - I guess he was right."
