NOT THE MOST ARTISTIC ALL-STAR GAME EVER
Pickoffs, errors, hit batsmen and some adventurous baserunning low-lighted
the 1998 IBL All Star Game held Sunday night at New Sicks Stadium in
Seattle. Luis Alicea's (CAS) 4th inning double scored Alex Rodriguez
(SEA), breaking a 3-3 tie and propelling the National Conference to a 7-3
victory over the American Conference. Greg Maddux (DAL) picked up the win,
although he did not pitch well. Denny Neagle (LEE) took the loss for the
AC.
The AC struck first when Bernard Gilkey (STM) homered in the 2nd off of
Randy Johnson (SEA), who struck out 5 in his 2-inning stint. The NC picked
up 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd on Joe Randa's (BUZ) 2-run double.
The AC retook the lead in the 3rd on Thomas's (MCM) rbi double, scoring
Deshields (TRI) and Piazza's (MCM) infield single, scoring Thomas. Mark
Grace (BUZ) then tied the score with a long HR, just fair at the rf foul
pole. AC manager Chuck McMath (LEE) argued long and loud that the ball was
foul, but was unsuccessful in getting the call changed or in getting
ejected.
The NC then pulled away: Alicea's double gave the NC guys the lead. Then,
in the 6th, Alex Rodriguez stole 2b after reaching on a fielder's choice.
ARod left with a slightly twisted ankle. Rusty Greer (DAL) ran for ARod
and was forced to play 3b for the NC for the last 3 innings, when Chipper
Jones (CSP) moved to ss. Jason Kendall (LAS), who caught the entire game
for the NC, drove Greer in to make it 5-3. Raul Mondesi's (SEA) sac fly
and Mickey Morandini's (SBW) rbi-single gave the NC a 7-3 lead after 7.
SEA pitchers Jeff Nelson, Rod Beck and Kevin Appier tag-teamed their way
through 3 scoreless innings to finish off the game for the Nationals.
