Cougars Sweep Devils in 4
The Cougars made Nelson pay for selecting them, by winning the series in 4 straight. Minus 1 game all the games were pretty much low scoring. The Box Scores and PBP are included after summary.
Game 3:
SF Schmidt vs SEA Franklin
SEA Franklin started out the 1st inning very shaky, hitting 2 batters and giving up a run. After that though Franklin was virtually unhittable the next 6 innings. In the bottom of the 1st Travis Lee hit a key 2 out, 2 rbi single. That seemed to rattle Schmidt because after that Schmidt was very ineffective. In every inning Schmidt appeared he gave up at least 1 run and he pitched 4.2 innings. After that the bullpen was effective enough not to let in any runs. The Devil's defense didn't quite play up to par either making 4 errors in the game and just a lot of hits just getting past the glove.
Game 4:
ANA Callaway vs HOU Oswalt
This game turned out to be a pitching duel. In the bottom of the 1st Magglio Ordonez hit a HR off of Callaway to get COU off to early 1-0 lead. Then in the bottom of the 3rd Fulmer doubled in Alfonzo who lead inning off with a walk. For the next 2 innings neither we nor the Devils scored. Then in the top of the 6th the Devils scored on a single by Blum. Cou 2-1. Fortunately Oswalt was able to get Edmonds and Nixon out to end the inning with no further damage. In the bottom of the inning it looked like COU might have another scoring chance after Ordonez reached 2nd with no outs (single and SB). Callaway then toughened up and got Lee to hit into dp later in inning with no runs in. Oswalt went another 1.2 innings and gave way for Cordero. Cordero then pitched a perfect 1.1 innings to get the save and COU Sweep of PAD.

Devils Drop 2 to the Cougars
After the Devils chose to play the Cougars, the Cougars are showing that the
choice may be a mistake, as the Cougars went on to take two games in Palo Alto
for a 2-0 lead.
Game 1:
Derek Lowe and Roy Oswalt traded scoreless innings for 5, but things looked up
for the Devils when they scratched across a run in the 6th. With one out,
Benito Santiago tripled to center, and then Craig Wilson walked. Brian Roberts
then singled in Santiago.
However, the Devils got no more off Oswalt, and while Lowe took a shutout into
the 9th, things began to unravel there for the Devils. With one out, Travis
Lee led off with a single, chasing Lowe and causing Devils manager Dwight Evans
to bring in John Smoltz -- who promptly gave up a 2-run homer to Ty Wigginton,
who had entered the game earlier as a pinch hitter and then stayed in the game.
The Devils got a man to second base in the bottom of the inning with one out
against Francisco Cordero, but could not get the tying run.
Oswalt picked up the victory, giving up the Devils to one run over eight
innings on five hits and striking out 13, despite giving up eight walks. Lowe
limited the Cougars to one run on seven hits and one walk in eight and a third
innings.
Edgardo Alfonzo had three hits for the Cougars. Roberts, other than the RBI
single, also walked twice for the Devils.
Michael Barrett suffered a slight injury in the second inning when he was hit
by a foul tip, forcing Geronimo Gil to play up to the 9th inning. When Gil was
lifted for a pinch hitter then, Brent Butler was forced to catch the 9th
inning.

Game 2:
Chuck Finley struggled before being pulled in the sixth inning, and the Devils
never recovered, as Finley gave up four runs on 11 hits and three walks in
five and a third innings. The Devils offense, meanwhile, was only able to get
two runs off Ismael Valdes in four innings on five hits and three walks, before
Valdes had to leave the game due to fatigue, and Jason Grimsley and Francisco
Cordero shut the Devils down the rest of the way, giving up only two hits and
a walk over the final five innings.
First baseman Travis Lee was forced to catch most of the game for the Cougars
after Geronimo Gil was ejected in the third inning for arguing balls and
strikes.
Eric Karros and Angel Echevarria each had three hits for the Cougars. The
Devils got a solo homer from Brian Daubach and a double and a single from Craig
Wilson.
Finley picked up the loss, while the official scorer exercised his discretion
and awarded the win to Grimsley. Cordero picked up his second save in as many
games.
